After quiting on me three times as I headed home on Friday and leaving me very fearful of driving anywhere, we took my sweet demon possessed car to the shop on Sunday afternoon. I was at my whits end with her especially after she quit another two times on my way to the garage. As we left the garage on Sunday afternoon, I made the comment that I just can’t keep going on like we have been if we still can’t determine what is wrong with her. My dear husband who seems to know the right thing to say at those hard times said “What kind of car do you want?” Music to my ears at that moment. Afraid to get my hopes diverted, I waited until 2:30 today to call the garage for an update.
PRAISE GOD! They found the issue. Apparently the wire that connects to the Crank Shaft Position Sensor was laying too close to the Exhaust Manifold. As the car got hotter, the wire got hotter and would automatically shut the car off. I just had to drive it enough for it to register with the computer. After much ado, they finally had computer codes to go from and it’s only going to cost around $150.00. I haven’t driven her yet but they tell me she hasn’t had any problems since they replaced the wire this afternoon. I am trying to be somewhat reserved though as she cooperates with them and seems to act up on me. So we’ll see.Â
For now, I am very pleased and I feel like I can breathe a little easier. My Lucie is on the mend and I can consider buying a new car on my time rather than on hers.Â
Oh good. I was going to ask you for an update. It takes awhile to forget being abandoned by your car but eventually you will
. Maybe you won’t even have to replace her! If you stay home with the baby (I know…I’m relentless) she could get much, much less driving or you could even go one car. I promise it doesn’t hurt that much when you only have one kid….
I sent you an email and then realized it was your work address so here it is:0)
Hey Erin,
I was just talking to Paul about your car. He said that normally the Crank shaft positioning sensor wire harness, unless the wires are actually completely burnt or broken, will not shut off the car. Without knowing what kind of car, etc, he said you should have them check your fuel pump. To do this, they will have to check the fuel pressure and the milliamps that the fuel pump is pulling from the fuel pump relay. A bad fuel pump will sometimes get hot and then shut off the engine causing the engine to stall. When it’s cool again, it will start up. If your mechanic pulls the fuel pump relay out and tests the milliamps coming into that connector(where the relay goes into the fuse block), they should be able to tell or eliminate as the cause. Do you still have a Lumina? The interesting thing is that if the fuel pump is bad, you will not get a code in your computer to tell you that. So…just thought you might want them to check that before you pick her up:-) Good luck!

Thanks Gina for the information. The wire was fried – they saved it for us so we could see. I’m still not ruling out all the possibilities of there being other issues. This was the one that actually finally coded into the computer. I’ve driven her home tonight so we’ll see what happens tomorrow and in the following days. The good thing with our garage is that they are willing to stand behind their work. Yes. Lucie is a Lumina. I did ask Friday afternoon about the fuel pump / fuel ignition module so that has somewhat been addressed. Only time will tell at this point.
Erin,
I finally went through my closet this weekend. E-mail me at Jaguarcatfan@aol.com with your mailing address. I brought everything to the office today (24th)so I can get it in the mail this week. There is a bunch of stuff (dresses, pants, capris, blouses, tops, shorts)in sizes 18 and 20W. If there are things you think you might not want let me know and I’ll pull them out.
